Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
