The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to make up for time.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
